Rafaqat Bibi's Story

Meet Rafaqat Bibi, a 55-year-old woman from Lahore, who has been experiencing upper abdominal pain for six months. She also faces repeated bouts of nausea, vomiting, and indigestion after taking fatty meals. Rafaqat was once a pillar of strength for her family, but now she faces struggles while carrying out even minor tasks. She was receiving symptomatic treatment but the relief was temporary. After suffering for a while, she decided to consult a specialist, who performed an ultrasound scan and some lab tests and diagnosed her with symptomatic gallstones – hard mineral deposits in the gallbladder. To relieve her pain, the doctor advised open cholecystectomy. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is overwhelming for her family.

Every day without surgery is a struggle for Rafaqat. If she doesn’t get the surgery, her health will continue to deteriorate due to poor dietary intake. She will always have a fear of pain and nausea after eating, and the condition may lead to infections, hospitalizations, and irreversible complications.

Rafaqat is a housemaid and earns approximately PKR 25,000 per month. She lives in a modest rented house along with her children. She has five children – three of them are married and her two sons work as daily wage laborers. Her family’s financial situation is stretched thin and they hardly manage to pay for the house rent, utility bills as well as groceries. Affording to pay for her surgery is significantly challenging for the family. During this time of need, Rafaqat contacted Transparent Hands and asked us for assistance. Rafaqat said with teary eyes:
