Meet Muhammad Hanif, a 75-year-old man from Lahore, who has been suffering from a lump in his left inguinal region for three months. Over time, his lump increased in size and became painful, leaving him unable to provide for his family. Concerned about his condition, he consulted a doctor. After running some diagnostic tests and an ultrasound scan, the doctor diagnosed him with a left inguinal hernia. It occurs when a part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in the abdominal wall, leading to a noticeable swelling in the groin. To relieve his pain, the doctor advised left inguinal hernia repair surgery. Unfortunately, the surgical cost is overwhelming for Hanif.

Due to the persistent pain and discomfort, Hanif’s ability to perform routine tasks as well as physical tasks such as lifting or prolonged standing has become significantly challenging. If his condition is left untreated, his hernia can become strangulated, which would necessitate emergency surgery.

Living in a modest one-room brick house with his wife and one child, Hanif hardly makes ends meet. Due to his illness, Hanif is unemployed. His wife works as a housemaid and earns just PKR 12000 per month. The family’s financial situation is stretched thin and they hardly cover the cost of groceries, and utility bills of PKR 3000 alongside the educational expenses of PKR 1000. Simple activities like bending and prolonged standing became significantly challenging for him. His left-sided hernia became symptomatic. For this, his doctor advised left inguinal hernia surgery. However, the surgical cost was beyond his financial capacity.

Living in a modest brick house with his wife and one child, Hanif struggled to make ends meet. Due to his condition, Hanif is unable to provide for his family. His wife worked as a housemaid and earned just PKR 12000 per month. This monthly income was insufficient to even cover their essentials. His mesh repair was done to fix his hernia. Hanif stayed in the hospital for three days and received post-operative care and essential medications. On 25th September 2024, he was discharged in stable condition from the hospital.
