History of the Islamic Lunar Year
Muslims created the Islamic Lunar Calendar under the leadership of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who was the second Caliph. The Islamic Calendar starts from 622 CE (1 AH) when the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions migrated from Mecca to Medina. The New Islamic Year is 1446 AH.
Lunar Months in the Islamic Calendar
Each month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar begins when the new crescent moon is sighted. There are a total of 12 lunar months in an Islamic year: Muharram, Safar, Rabi Al-Awwal, Rabi Al-Thani, Jamada Al-Awwal, Jamada Al-Thani, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qadah, and Dhul Hijjah.
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].” (Qur’an | 9:36)
The Four Sacred Months in Islam
Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab are the four sacred months for Muslims.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Time has come back to its original state which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth; the year is twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three of them are in succession; Dhul-Qa’da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and (the fourth being) Rajab Mudar (named after the tribe of Mudar as they used to respect this month) which stands between Jumad (ath-thani) and Sha’ban.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4662)
