Munir Ahmed's Story

Munir Ahmed, a 29-year-old man from Kashmir, has been experiencing recurrent bouts of epigastric pain for three years. He took antacids and PPIs but the relief was temporary only. After suffering for a while, he decided to consult a specialist, who conducted some medical tests and an ultrasound scan and diagnosed Munir with Peptic Ulcer Disease. It is characterized by the formation of open sores in the stomach lining, leading to burning stomach pain and indigestion. His doctor recommended an endoscopy; a procedure to visually examine the internal lining of upper gastrointestinal tract. However, the cost of the procedure is beyond Munir’s financial reach.

Munir’s life is extremely affected by the pain and discomfort due to his chronic illness.

Without endoscopy and treatment, his untreated peptic ulcer can lead to severe complications such as internal bleeding, perforation of the stomach lining, or obstruction in the digestive tract due to scarring.

Munir lives in a small brick house with his joint family of nine members. He is an office employee and earns just PKR 35000 per month. Munir and his brother hardly make ends meet after covering the educational expenses of PKR 6000 and utility bills of PKR 1000 every month. Moreover, they are burdened with a staggering loan of PKR 300,000 which makes the financial situation worse. They have no room left for savings to pay for his much-needed medical procedure.
